Iceland. The hospital serves a population of approximately
40,000 in Akureyri and the surrounding area, being the main
hospital outside the capital. The department, which is well
equipped, has been expanding recently in new facilities.
Surgical specimens from about 2,500 patients are received
yearly, and post mortems amount to 45-50, half of those of
forensic kind. The department has close connections with
the Department of Pathology, University of Iceland and the
personnel have been responsible for pathological courses for
